Shri B. Bhattacharjee obtained his Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University College of Technology, Calcutta followed by his Post Graduate Training Programme in Nuclear Science and Technology from Bhabha Atomic Centre Training School.

Shri Bhattacharjee has spent the entire tenure of his professional career in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), during which he could distinguish himself as one of those who have excelled equally in both R&D work as well as execution of projects. Some of the highly complex and multi-disciplinary technologies, all from grass root levels, requiring the best of all branches of engineering sciences, have placed India at the fore-front of nuclear science and technology in the world.

He was Director Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Member, Atomic Energy Commission during April 2001 to April 2004. This was followed by his two year tenure in DAE from May, 2002 to April 2006 as Special Advisor to Chairman Atomic Energy Commission.

Shri Bhattacharjee is a Member/Fellow of a number of professional bodies in the country which includes the Fellowship of Indian National Academy of Engineering.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of Nuclear Science & Technology, the President of India has conferred Shri Bhattacharjee with the National Award “Padma Shri” in the year 2001.

Since August, 2006 Shri Bhattacharjee is a Member of National Disaster Management Authority, New Delhi (being reappointed for the second term w.e.f December, 2011 on completion of his first term in August, 2011) with the responsibilities of addressing the issues involving:

- Nuclear and Radiological Emergency / Disasters
- Forecasting and Early Warning of Natural Hazards
- Communication for Disaster Management
- Disaster Management Information System
(Cartography, Hazard Profile, GIS – platform and Vulnerability Analysis and Risk Assessment)
- Seismic Microzonation
- Global Warming and Climate Change.
