School safety project

National School Safety Project (NSSP) – a demonstrative project:

NDMA in partnership with the 22 States/UTs implemented ‘National School Safety Programme (NSSP)’, in 8600 schools in 43 districts spread over 22 States/UTs of the country falling in seismic zone IV & V with the aim to sensitize children and the school community on disaster preparedness and safety measures. The project was operational upto 31st March, 2019.

Under the project, following activities were undertaken:

  • Formulation of National Disaster Management Guidelines on School Safety Policy, 2016.
  • Preparation of Teachers Training Module on School Safety by NIDM.
  • Translation into regional language and printing of Teacher’s Training Modules.
  • Training of Trainers Programme (15 trainers per district).
  • Training of teachers (500 teachers, officials etc per district).
  • Preparation of School Disaster Management Plans in 200 school in each 43 districts.
  • Review and approval of School DM Plans prepared by 200 schools in each of 43 districts.
  • Disaster Preparedness Kits in 200 schools in each of 43 districts.
  • Mock drills in 200 schools in each of 43 districts.
  • Translation, printing, dissemination of IEC Material.
  • Sensitization Programmes at State/UT level.
  • Grant-in-aid to State Education Departments for sensitization programme and awareness activities.
  • Rapid Visual Survey in 200 schools in each of 43 districts.
  • Non-Structural Mitigation Measures in 200 schools in each of 43 districts.
  • Structural Retrofitting of one school each in 22 States/UTs.

Some of the important achievements envisaged under the project are as under:

  • Awareness campaigns and preparedness drills in schools have made important contribution towards enhanced risk awareness amongst children who in turn have become ambassadors of safety thereby spreading awareness in their communities.
  • Formulation of National Disaster Management Guidelines on School Safety Policy, which is an important milestone in the Education Policy Sphere of the Country.
