    Nuclear Emergencies

While using radiation sources or due to misplacement or faulty handling
Causes – human error, system failure, sabotage, earthquake, cyclone, flood
Go indoors, close doors and windows
Switch on radio/television for public announcements from authority
Cover all food, water and only consume covered items
If in the open, cover your face and body with wet handkerchief
Extend full cooperation to local authorities
Discuss nuclear radiation safety with children and family members
    Do not panic
Avoid water from open wells/ponds, exposed crops
Don’t disobey any instruction of the district or civil defence authorities
Find a ditch, hill or building for cover
Lower windows to avoid flying glass
Get as low as possible in the car
Shield your face and eyes at all times
Primary concern is to assess and treat any life-threatening injuries
Switch on the radio/television for public announcements
Three rules for safety - Time, Distance, Shielding
Stay for minimum time near the source and take cover
Know exactly what the sound, signalling an alert for your town/city is
    Determine an evacuation destination
Consider a shelter/room/inner section of the house which can be used as a shelter
    Know the appropriate emergency procedure
Ensure adequate stock of basic survival supplies
Try to fill as many containers with water
Water and food containers should be washed to prevent contamination
When building a shelter or creating one inside an existing structure, leave space for exit and entry
Designate a room/inner space as your shelter
Ensure that supplies are easily found in the dark
    Monitor official government information channels
Decontaminate any open wounds to minimise the chances of radioactivity passing into the blood stream
Remove victims from the immediate area of exposure to a proper medical facility
Normal water supplies will be contaminated, but water already in pipes and taps may be used if purified
Radiations fallout levels decrease after the initial 24 hours, but will affect soil, water resources for a long time
As far as possible, avoid water from open wells/ponds, exposed crops
